Minutes for Greek Council

I. Co-Chairs
- The budget for Greek Council is being voted on today
o It’s looking like Greek Council will be receiving about $14,500
o A few of our requested programs were declined but it looks like they will be made available through other Trinity organizations
- Start looking at your schedules and send either Spencer or Laura nights and times you are available to meet for next year

II. Dr. Moffett
- Congratulations to SPURS, Gammas, Sigmas, Alpha Chis, and PDKs who all achieved excellence on their standards
- I Chis received an honorable mention. The book was phenomenal and I plan to use it to show to the Trinity University Board what Greeks are achieving
- Greek Week is going great!
o Congrats to Pikes for winning the dodge-ball tournament
o Pike vs. Staff/Administration dodge ball game? Make it happen!!!
 Because WE ALL would love to see Dean Tuttle dodgin’
o We are going to table the conversation about grades
- Trinity University Conduct Board Decision
o Hazing is a violation of University Policy so it seems appropriate that hazing violations are handled by the Trinity University Conduct Board
 Ex- swimmers had to go to the Trinity University Conduct Board for their hazing violations so it’s logical that the Greeks should have to do the same
o Unfortunately, Greek Council Judicial has not proven to be effective and we do not want this to present a bigger problem down the road. The Greek Judicial Board is great in theory but not pragmatically.
o I am trying to make sure that
1. Men and Women are happy to join our clubs and they enjoy the experience
2. I don’t want you guys to have to deal with something ugly should something bad happen down the road. This is a protective measure.
o We want to see clubs thrive not just survive
o I am always open to communication and my door is always open to you guys.
o I want to continue to challenge you to be the type of members founders will be proud of and new members will want to emulate.
- I will be meeting with the Trinity University Board on May 14th
o I’m going to speak of all the phenomenal things going on in the Greek Community. - My door is always open and conversation is always welcome.

III. Josh
- Please send Josh and update about how much money your club has raised
- So far, we predict Greek have raised around $50,000!
- We will be training Judicial Chairs so that if member break rules, clubs can deal with it internally. Ultimately, this will lead to a bigger and stronger role for judicial chairs.
- Alumni
o At the moment we are working on creating a Greek Alumni Advisory Council
o The new council will be an avenue to send infor to alumni and also to be able to pull in resources from them (networking, funding, etc..)
o It will also provide an active way for Greeks to get to have closer relationships with their alumni

o Gammas, Sigmas, PDKs, SPURs, and Alpha Chis
- We will be working closer with Greeks (more one-on-one time) to help even more clubs achieve excellence next year.

Greek Blog Calling all Greeks… This year we are changing things up a bit and expanding Greek Olympics so that it lasts for an entire week! Lots of planning has gone into this and it’s going to be a lot of fun. It will be a chance for each Greek organization to bond with other clubs while allowing competition to run rampant. Participation is a must! The weeks activities will include dodgeball, powderpuff football, tug-of-war, capture the flag, and water relay races. We will also have a kickoff rally, a sorority dessert party, and an All-Greek party at Flats. There will be prizes given to the all around fraternity and sorority winners as well as some other awesome awards given to individuals. Here are the activities for the week: • Sunday April 11th o Kick off “rally” at 6pm on Esplanade o Prizes, rules, games Monday April 12th o Last One Standing 9am o Photo Scavenger Hunt at 9am o Dodgeball Tournament at 7pm in Webster’s Gym • Tuesday April 13th o Powder Puff Football at 7pm on IM Field o Tug of War at 8pm on IM Field • Wednesday April 14th o Sorority Dessert Party at 5pm in the Fiesta Room o Capture the Flag on upper campus • Thursday April 15th o Water Relay games in the pool 8-930pm • Friday April 16th o Last One Standing ends at 5pm o Photo Scavenger Hunt ends at 5pm o All Greek Party at Flats at 8pm • Saturday April 17th o GIVE o Block Party award ceremony Last One Standing is a test of endurance. During this event, one member of each club will stand at the magic stones and see who can last the longest. Clubs are allowed to switch their members out while recording the switches. The event will last 24 hours a day starting on Monday and going until Friday afternoon. The team that lasts the longest or is the “Last One Standing” will win 50 points for their fraternity or sorority in the overall competition. The Photo Scavenger Hunt will consist of a list of 20 photo ideas that each club will have the ability to take and send to Greek Council. Each photo will win the team points in the overall score

I. Josh Currie – Announcement – Greek party – invite independents. Raise money for charity. Tickets sold for $10 at the door. Get 90% all Greeks in attendance, and get 400-500 Independents to come. Costs: 4 busses divided by groups is $130/group. Venue could hold 2,000 students. Would be a private party, as long as we can provide a date soon, on a Friday. Minors accepted.

TABC:

Offering services to you, and letting you know about the effects of underage drinking, signs of alcohol poisoning. Effective today, if you are having a party and you feel someone has alcohol poisoning, you will not get in trouble for calling. Feel free to call, email, or make appointment to talk to TABS, free of charge.

a. Comedy Troupe coming to Trinity again this Spring, we would be putting it on with Tiger and TABC and Res Life. Greek Council funds would go towards this event. We fund an educational speaker every year, and this would be in the last part of January. Approved!

b. Greek Week

i. Right now we have training for April 24^th, so Greek would go Monday April 19^th-Sunday April 25^th. Capture the flag, synchronized diving, all week photo scavenger hunt, flag football, hand on the Magic Stones every night of the week, all-Greek party at flats, bays one night during week, a senior activity, but WE NEED COMMITMENT! YES!

a. We were contacted by TABC, this year there has been an escalated number of cases of Alcohol Poisoning, but would like to speak to Greek Community about drinking on a club by club basis. Would come in, talk to club during meeting. Have asked to come to next general meeting to talk about services. This event would count as Standards. Free and voluntary. Could also use event to reach out to others on campus.

b. Orientation Calendars need to be completed. Recommend that a draft comes in before Winter Break! Teresa and Roberto will be emailing you to let you know what date we need them by. Final draft due a week before Bid Day.

Women's Rush

Being a part of Greek Life at Trinity is one of the best decisions we've made in college. Even if you end up not joining a sorority or a fraternity, it's a great way to meet friends in your own class year, too. What does it mean to be Greek at Trinity though? To start off, there are no national (Panhellenic) sororities at Trinity, although there is one national (IFC) fraternity. We also have a longer rush process than most other schools do - rush officially starts October 9th and lasts through Bid Day in February. Greek Council had a rush kick-off pizza party on the day rush started, but it’s not too late to put your name on the master rush list! Just email Teresa Bowyer (tbowyer@trinity.edu) or Roberto Restrepo (rrestrep@trinity.edu). If your name is on the list, the sororities and fraternities will all get a master copy and will be able to contact you throughout rush. Then they will probably be contacting you to go to informal events, which are a great way to get to know members one-on-one, as well as their formal parties. Each sorority hosts two formal parties in the fall, a first round and a date party. Each fraternity has one formal rush event in the fall. Look at the calendar on the Greek Council webpage to see these dates! All of these events (formal and informal) are totally optional, so you can go to whatever fits into your schedule and you are most interested in. Don't stress about making it to everything because we've all been in your position before and understand that you have homework and other things to take care of, too. Next semester there will be an all-sorority dessert party when school starts and it will explain the remainder of the women’s process like RSVP and Pref. The men will each have one additional formal rush event in the spring. To take a bid in the spring there is a minimum GPA (2.0, 2.5 for athletes), so be sure to keep your grades up this semester so you can join a sorority or fraternity if you decide you want to. If this doesn’t answer all of your questions, feel free to email us about anything else now or in the future. We hope to meet you soon!

Allison – Get Pumped for Tigerfest!

We have some exciting events during Spirit Week! You can actually sign up to be most spirited organization in the event! Plus there are opportunities to win sweet prizes… which could be a co-sponsored event! We are having the Golf Cart Parade and festival as part of competition; and decorate a Cult Movie-Themed golf cart for your organization for $10! “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” is the GALA theme. Nominate a male / female from your organization, or from a brother / sister group to be a campus favorite. Tickets, then announced at the Gala. Forms due Wednesday, October 7.

JoAnna – Research Assistant in Dr. Becker’s lab

We took a vote to run body image program for this year! Awesome intervention program to reduce negative internalization among sorority sisters. AWESOME! It passes!

a. Reinstatement of Greek Week potentially, to promote Greek and campus unity. Prizes! Would be post-orientation, culmination of Greek Olympics – talent show, week-long photo scavenger hunts, etc, slip ‘n’ slides? Must put into budget by Monday. YES!

As the first month of classes draws to a close, we would like to take a moment to welcome everyone back to Trinity. There is a great year ahead for Greek life, and we are so excited to be here and be a part of it all.

The first major service event of the year, the Polycistic Kidney Disease walk, was a fabulous success! Team Emma beat their goal of $2,500, thanks to generous donations of time and money from the Trinity community. Team Emma was formed by the Phi Delta Kappa sorority in memory of one member, Emma Hutchinson, who died of PKD in late summer 2008. There was a fabulous turnout at the walk: representatives from every sorority, two fraternities, and many independents turned out to Breckenridge park on Saturday morning. Thank you to everyone who came and helped commemorate Emma!!

I hope that orientation is going well for all of you. Just a reminder that if you have any questions or concerns about orientation procedures or rules, please contact Jade Martinez (women) or Peter Senior (men). Of course, you are always free to contact Rachel Hugman, Joshua Beebe (advisor), or me. New Actives: please remember to focus on your studies throughout orientation. This is a very busy time filled with fun activities, but it is critical that you stay focused on your responsibilities as a student. If you are having trouble managing your time, remember to talk to your orientation chair about rearranging your schedule so that you have more time for school work. Also remember that your new fraternity or sorority can provide an excellent network for tutors. I remember last year having one of my fraternity brothers who is a Geoscience major tutor me in Volcanology. It helped me immensely, and all that I can say is that the man had the patience of a saint.

Greek Council elections will be occuring after Spring Break. Nominations will be held at the Greek Council meeting on Tuesday, March 17th and elections will be held on Tuesday, March 31st. If you would like to be nominated, please contact your organization president so that they can nominate you at the meeting. If you have any questions about the responsibilities of a particular position or want to know about what it is like to be on Greek Council, please send me (Patrick Nuttall) an email and I will get it directed to the right place. The positions on Greek Council Exec are: Mens' Co-Chair, Womens' Co-Chair, Mens' Rush and Orientation Chair, Womens' Rush and Orientation Chair, Secretary, Standards Chair, Philanthropy (Service) Chair, Treasurer, and Judicial Chair. You will need to attend the Greek Council meeting on March 31st to give a speech or if you cannot attend, you must submit a prepared statement to be read on your behalf. You cannot serve on Greek Council Exec and as the President, Vice President, or Orientation chair of your organization, so start thinking about what kind of position you would like to be running for now.

First of all, thank you to everyone for following Bid Day rules of appropriate behavior. Cooperation with these rules helps protect the health and safety of all members of the Greek and campus community, as well as protecting facilities on our campus. Professional photographs from Bid Day festivities taken by Charles Parish are available for viewing and purchase on his website, Parishphoto.com. There are some great photos of individuals, groups, and entire organizations so I recommend that you take a look at them. Here are a few Bid Day photos of my own!

As a reminder to all New Actives, the resources which we shared with you at Greek 101 are all available through the links in the blog posting below this. If you have concerns about your orientation program, please contact Peter Senior (Mens' Rush/Orientation Chair) or Jade Martinez (Womens' Rush/Orientation Chair) so that we can get these issues resolved. Also remember to keep up with your class work. Greek life here at Trinity is an amazing experience, but remember that your top priority should be to fulfill your commitments as a student! Orientation is a busy time filled with a lot of fun activities, but if you have concerns that you will not have enough time to get your class work completed then please remember to talk to your orientation chair.

Also remember that as exciting as joining a new Greek organization is that you need to maintain your relationships with people outside of those organizations. Stay in touch with your friends who are independent or who joined other organizations, and most importantly remember to call your parents! They most likely always worry about you but a lack of communication at a busy time like this will make them even more concerned. Remember these tips and good luck with the rest of orientation!

I. Petition

Eric Koplain petitioned to be allowed onto the rush list. He was a de-pledge from the Kappa Kappa Delta fraternity in Spring of 2008.
The Kappas granted him permission to rush.
Final vote: 9 for, zero against, 4 neutral. Eric will be allowed to rush.

II. Bid Day

Please do not show up intoxicated
You can be in the fountain but DO NOT climb on it.
Spirited dress is encouraged, but please keep it appropriate.

Sorority RSVP and Rush Updates

Thank you to all of the women who came in today to submit RSVP cards. We had excellent turnout and we are very excited about the strong showing. Remember to pick up your RSVP cards from the Campus and Community Involvement office on Thursday, January 22nd. The deadline for the womens' rush list and RSVP has passed, so unfortunately if you are not on the list then you will not be able to pref and receive a bid this year.

All men must be on the rush list by 11:59pm on Monday, February 2nd in order to pref and receive a bid. If you are not on the list then please email the Mens' Rush and Orientation chair, Peter Senior, as soon as possible. Please provide your name, class year, dorm name and room number, cell phone number, box number, and major. If you do not get on the rush list by this deadline, then you will not be able to pref and accept a bid this year.

Pref Day will be Wednesday, February 4th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Come to the Campus and Community Involvement office in order to submit a pref card. You must submit a pref card in order to get a bid and it will be that day only! Greek 101 is a mandatory information session which is required for everyone who has submitted a pref card and wants to accept a bid. The session will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 5th in the Chapman Auditorium. If you have a conflict with this session then you need to email Peter Senior or Jade Martinez, as soon as possible.

Bid Day will be Friday, February 6th. Please make sure that you provide the most convenient phone number on your pref card and be by your phone between 2:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., as we will be contacting you at this number in the event that you do not receive a bid. These phone calls will come from either Joshua Beebe or Becky Spurlock and the caller ID will show up as 210-999-7011. If you do not receive a phone call by 3:30 p.m. then please go to the Witt Center, where you will pick up your bid. Men should proceed to the fountain while women will need to stop by the Murchison lounge where they will sign their bids and then go to the fountain. All of this information will be explained and distributed at Greek 101, so if you have questions or concerns then we can address them then. New Semester

Welcome back everyone! I hope that you all had an excellent winter break and that you are ready for a new semester. I am very excited about the improved rush numbers which we have seen this year. Mens' rush numbers have improved significantly this year and womens' numbers have continued to be strong. Now that we are about to begin formal rush, Bid Day is quickly approaching. Rushees should pay attention to due dates and events, as many of these are mandatory in order to submit a pref card and receive a bid. Fall 2008 was also the first semester in five years that we have had no judicial issues. We would like to commend organizations for their commitment to standards and will continue to ensure that social Greek organizations follow Trinity University and Greek Council policies. Our year is off to an excellent start and we hope to have another successful semester.

II. Rush Updates:

Phi Sigs would like to change their rush date from Saturday, Nov. 8 to Friday, Nov. 7- the Phi Sigs will be taking the rushees to a hockey game. It would make the Saturday open for fraternity rush. The movement was passed.
Men's OAC- if no men have applied, women will be in charge of all of the orientation programs.
We have an excess of rush booklets. If you would like to set up a table in Coates to advertise your event, feel free to hand out the rush booklets as well. All rush chairs may come to CCI and pick up the booklets from Josh.
Men need to apply for money for rush events. If you would like the money, please come speak with us. If you plan to attend an exec meeting to apply, let Rachel know and come to ask for money before your event. Exec will need to know exactly what the money is going towards.

III. Service Update:

Due to many time constraints and lack of interest, Best Buddies won't happen; however, we will have Greek Olympics with elements of Best Buddies (a Best Buddies team will be competing) and the olypmics will be open to the entire school.

Get creative and dress to impress :) - Date Parties are supposed to be a fun social event between actives and rushees. The rush season is upon us once again, and that means that many young spuds get their opportunity to blossom into future Greeks at Trinity. The men's rush "season" has been going well, and we have a large group of guys rushing. The freshmen, and a few upperclassmen, are getting the opportunity to meet many guys from the different clubs. Again, I would like to remind everyone that we have a very diverse group of fraternities on campus, and I am sure there is a club for everyone; you just need to look! Topic: Jerseys and Big Sisters :) Jerseys are the shirts given to new members upon completion of their orientation (they are usually shirts who previous members have worn and have 'willed' or passed down). These shirts display sorority colors and letters, and have nicknames on the back. Jersey names are secrets and are usually based on a funny/amusing story or a characteristic of the owner of a jersey. Jerseys can also be willed down at Senior will downs when senior members of clubs choose to give away their sorority paraphernalia upon graduation.
New members will find out who their big sisters are during orientation. All of the sororities have different ways of finding out who big sisters are; several have ceremonies or special nights in which little sisters will find out who their bigs are. The big and little sister relationship is a unique mentor ship and may also divide new members into families. Families usually consist of a little and big sister and her line of big sisters before her. For instance, your big's big sister, will be your grand-big, and her big sister will be you great-grand big and so forth.

Sorority Rush 2

Rush goes from late September till the first week of February. This means that rushees have a significantly long time to get to know sorority women and decide if being Greek is something that they would really like to be. During rush you'll be invited to formalized parties (1st rounds, date parties and holiday parties**) and informal events like dinner at different restaurants or clubbing. Once you sign the master rush list you should receive invitations from each sorority to these events. You may also be contacted for a "one-on-one", in which a sorority member will ask to meet with you for lunch or coffee.

**Please note that if you do not receive an invitation to one of these parties, you will need to contact the rush chair of the particular sorority and let them know. Also, the Zeta Chi "date party" on October 24 is actually a "second round" and their date party will in fact be on December 5.

What is dirty rush? Dirty rush is when a rushee is pressured by a sorority member to rush/pref a certain sorority above all others. It also occurs when a rushee is alluded/promised a bid or a big sister. And finally, dirty rush occurs if a sorority member breaks silence. Silence is a time designated 1 hour before and 1 hour after each sorority's party, in which only members of the hosting party can speak to rushees. This allows fair rush and makes sure that rushees aren't being pressured to hang out with another club on another sorority's party date.

The sororities at Trinity encourage rushees to rush every sorority and attend at least one of everyone's events. You'll never know who you like until you rush everyone. Rush may seem like a stressful thing, so please don't feel that you have to attend EVERYTHING. Go to what you want/have time for. Sorority members understand that you have other clubs/interests and of course academics. In fact, in order to accept a bid in the spring you will need a 2.0 cumulative GPA (2.5 for student athletes), and need to have taken 12 hours in the fall and be registered for 12 hours in the spring. Because of these stipulations for bid acceptance, we encourage all rushees to keep academics at a high priority.

In January, rushees will be asked to "RSVP" to at least 2 sororities that they would like to continue rushing. At that time, the sororities will decide if they would like you to continue rushing them, which they will indicate by extending you an invitation to their formal party. After formal parties, rushees will be asked to "Pref": rushees will be asked to rank in preferential order which sorority they would like to receive a bid from. We encourage you to pref more than one club, but if one is all you want, you are free to do that as well - this is referred to as a "suicide pref". We ask that rushees think over what it means to pref a sorority before actually doing so. One should not pref a sorority if they are not fully intending to accept a bid and become a member. At bid acceptance, you will become a full member of that sorority (sorority's at Trinity do not believe that you need to earn your membership), and we expect that if you accept a bid that you are willing to go through orientation and become a member.

Orientation lasts 4-6 weeks and is a time when new classes will bond with each other and their clubs. New members will learn the history, traditions and values of their sorority and participate in sisterhood bonding activities. A generic orientation schedule may include: mon-thurs dinners, study hours and then activities, and then over-nights on weekends. Study hours exist so that new members have time to study for thier classes and keep up with their academics. Trinity is very strict against hazing and all of the sorority's are well aware of both Trinity and Texas State Law against it. We have a nine hours hands-off policy where new members will receive nine-hours each school night in which orientation activities will not occur. Please do not believe any stereotypes that you hear about Trinity's sororities. A lot of people will sadly try to categorize our women and call the actions of an individual to be the characteristic of an entire group. You may hear rumors about different sororities or their orientations, but please don't let these discourage you from meeting with a certain group. All of our sorority's have wonderful women who are proud of their clubs and each other.

Sorority Rush Blog numero uno

Hey everyone, I'm Jade Martinez, the sorority rush and orientation chair. I'll be blogging about women's rush, so be sure to check back often for new stuff :)

Choosing to rush at Trinity University is an amazing choice. The Greek system at TU is proud of our 7 local sororities. Because we are local, we have significantly lower dues (in comparison to national chapters) and each sorority has a unique and personal relationship to the Trinity campus. Sorority women at Trinity are involved in different things all over campus, and several hold some of the top leadership positions in their organizations. We have a variety of majors and we represent states across the country as well as International countries (Ecuador, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the UK, Holland and more). Sorority women are proud of their clubs and each other. We are dedicated to uplifting the individual and upholding the four pillars of Greek Life: Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Social.

Sounds great right? Now you're probably wondering what sorority women actually do. - Yes, we love to have fun (several of us host mixers with fraternities or sports teams). - Yes, we have formals (most of us go camping or on beach weekends). - and Yes, we do love to each lunch/dinner together in mabee while wearing the same shirt (what's with that?!?)

But BESIDES ALL THAT, sororities at Trinity are supportive networks. In a sorority, you can count on your sisters to be there for you (whether it be personally or academically). Several sorority women use their own alumni for networking possibilities and advice for careers and internships. Your sorority sisters will accept you for who you are and will celebrate your successes (like when you land a lead role in the play! - congrats to Senior Alpha Chi Jamie Hyndman; see her in 'Booth' premiering next month - or when your team wins a big game - congratulations to senior Spur Chelsea Wilson whose 2 goals helped shutout Oglethorpe 6-0 in women's soccer).

Sorority members also host big service events throughout the semester: the women of Zeta Chi have partnered up with the Sexual Diversity Alliance to host a Drag Show TONIGHT at 8:30pm on Esplanade in which all proceeds will benefit the San Antonio AIDS foundation, and the women of Gamma Chi Delta will host their 3rd annual Concert for the Cure benefiting the American Cancer Society on January 28 at Sunset Station's Lone Star Pavilion featuring country artists Roger Creager and Paul Eason.

Sorority women at Trinity helped found the Sorority Body Image Program, which is the first evidence-based, sustainable eating disorders prevention program in the country. It has gained national attention through Tri-Delta Sorority and is well-known in the medical world. Sorority women at Trinity realize that college women have the unique power to spread the 'healthy ideal' and are dedicated to supporting one another to achieve healthy perceptions of own bodies. This week (October 13-17) is FAT TALK FREE WEEK, a booth will be set up in Coates University Center where you can pledge to eliminate fat talk from your conversations and encourage others to do the same. My name is Patrick Nuttall, and I am the Mens' Co-Chair for Greek Council. In addition to seeing updates from me, you will see postings from Rachel Hugman (Womens' Co-Chair) and other members of Greek Council!

While we encourage you to take a look at the Greek Life website to get more information about being Greek at Trinity, make sure to follow this blog for announcements and updates about the latest events. Thank you to everyone who came out to the Rush Kickoff Pool Party on Thursday, September 25th. I have posted some pictures which are courtesy of Jade Martinez, our Womens' Rush/Orientation Co-Chair.

If you were unable to attend the Pool Party and you are not on the Master Rush list, please email Jade Martinez if you are a woman or Peter Senior if you are a man. Please send them your full name, graduation year, phone number, Dorm name and room number, hometown, intended major, and your birthday. This information will help the organizations learn more about you and your interests. Also make sure to check the calendar of rush dates posted on the Rush webpage or in the information booklets given out at the Pool Party and other events. There are copies of the booklets in the Greek Council cubicle of CCI if you do not have already one.
